Chironomids

Common Name: Midges, True Flies, 'buzzers', blood worms etc
Description: A family of small flies such as Midges, Mosquitoes, Blood worms etc. Very common in most New Zealand lakes and back waters on rivers. Especially if a sillty bottom is present. Most are very small hook size #16 and #18 being most common. Lake trout especially feed on the various Chironomid larvae throughout the summer monthes (Ahuriri Delta in  Lake Benmore is a prime Chironomid fishery). Most are dark colored although red coloration is also common.
