Tying Matuka Style Lures
Unique to New Zealand this great range of lures is quick and easy to tie and are great fish catchers. Lures of this style include Parsons Glory, Green Orbit, Grey Ghost, Dorothy, Black Prince and many more, all are tied using the same simple steps...
1. Tie in a short tail of hackle fibers as specified by the pattern, usually red or orange.
2. Next tie in some good strong wire to rib the wing and then the body material, usually chenille, floss or wool. Wrap the body material forward to form a nice even body leaving plenty of room at the head of the hook to tie in the wing, hackle and finish off the fly.
3. Find 4 matching hackle feathers, length is subject to personal taste but about two times the length of the hook shank should be right. Tie in these feathers at the head of the fly.
4. Now use the wire rib to secure the rest of the wing to the top of the body. Use your fingers to separate the feather fibers to make a small window to wrap the rib through and try to keep the rib vertical over the body, spiraling it forward under the body not over the wing. Make as many even wraps as required to secure the wing and then tie off the rib.
5. Add a hackle, usually of the same color as the wing and tied wet fly style sloping back.
6. Form a head and whip finish.
Variations
Rabbit flies are essentially tied in exactly the same way, but a strip of rabbit fur still on the pelt is substituted for the feathers of the wing.
