Equipment List

We have an excellent range of flies, leaders, nylon etc available in the store, but for those wishing to bring some of their own tackle here are a few recommendations.

Rod

A high modulus fast action 9 foot #6 or #7 weight is most practical for the South Island. G-Loomis, Winston, Sage, Orvis and many others make rods of this type.

Reel

Any reel capable of holding the appropriate line and 100yds of 20pound backing is fine. Most of our fisheries contain large fish so a disc style drag is well worth the extra cost and large arbor reels are very popular.

Fly Line

To match the rod, often we are fishing fairly short casts, so if your rod does not perform well 'up close' you might consider also bringing a line of 1 weight heavier than recommended for your rod (especially if you have an older Sage).  It is  important that your line be of a dull or neutral color. No ice blue or white fly lines please!  Both Cortland (Lazer Line Grey) and Sci-Anglers (Ultra3 Olive   Mastery XPS Grey) make suitable lines for New Zealand conditions.

Leader and Tippet

We fish long leaders down this way. 12 foot is minimum length, 15 to 18 foot is better. If that's longer than you are used to, then practice before you get down here. Tippets down to 3x or 4x are the norm. My leaders of choice are Umpqua 'Normal' and 'Spring Creek' models. With our very clear water flurocarbon tippets are also popular, my own choice is a japanese brand we stock called Labios, but Umpqua's Deceiver is also good.

Flies

I recommend you stock up on local flies when you arrive, there are many unique New Zealand patterns and our flies tend to be both heavier and larger than those used elsewhere. Check out our flybox section for a few ideas on flies to bring and how to tie them.

Waders

Most New Zealand Anglers 'Wade wet' with boots, shorts and polypropylene long johns. Average summer temperature is around 18 to 23 Celsius, water temperature from 10 to 15 Celsius. If that's cold were you are then you might want to consider bring stocking foot waders and felt soled boots.
