When to Come
September
First signs of spring with the land at its greenest. Opening of fishing season
in south westland and fiordland for searun trout. Fishing opportunities in South Island fairly limited.
October
Spring weather throughout, opening of fishing season in most areas. Good sea run
trout fishing in most coastal areas.
November
Often Windy, dry fly fishing is just beginning in most south island areas, all
regions are now open for fishing. Great sea run trout fishing at east coast
river mouths. Some early salmon runs.
December
One of the least crowded months of the year, weather is becoming more settled
and excellent dry fly fishing is to be had in most areas. Some salmon around.
January
Excellent fishing for trout , great dry fly and nymph fishing in most areas
although waters can be a little crowded as New Zealanders enjoy their summer
holidays. Salmon can be scarce.
February
Weather is most settled, large terrestrial dry flies abound, this is 'Cicada
Time'. Salmon runs are in full swing. The most popular time for visiting anglers
so book early.
March
Weather still warm and settled, march tends to be the last month for high
country fishing, still plenty of low country opportunities and salmon are still
running.
April
Last month of the fishing season in most areas, some late mayfly hatches and
good river mouth fishing. Last of the salmon runs.
May
Fishing has become relatively quiet in the South Island, most local anglers have
either hung up their gear for the season or are preparing to travel north to
fish the Tongariro
June
Rainbows are beginning to run in the Tongariro, some winter fishing to be had in
south island lakes for those hardy souls prepared to brave the cool
temperatures.
July
The Tongariro is in full swing, running rainbows abound. South Island fishing limited.
August
Some sea run trout activity at South Island river mouths. Tongariro still strong.
